Presentations Offered
Thank you for your interest in having Family Tree Clinic educators visit your organization or school. This school year, we will continue to provide the quality, comprehensive, and inclusive sex ed you have always gotten from Family Tree. With the collaboration and feedback of community partners, we are offering four modes of lesson delivery to best serve the range of needs. The modes are outlined below.
- Synchronous In-Person Presentation: A Family Tree educator will come to your school or organization to teach the lesson in person.
- Synchronous Video Presentation: Students would join a Family Tree video call and we would present the lesson synchronously with opportunities for student engagement and questions.
- Asynchronous Learning: Family Tree shares interactive materials (slides, videos, online activities, etc.) that are designed for students to work through individually at their own pace.
- Anonymous Q&A (synchronous and asynchronous options available): This can be paired with either of the above options. Students submit anonymous questions via a google form and a Family Tree educator will respond with answers via email, video, or we can schedule a time to do a video call answer session with all students.
You know your students and we know sex ed. These options are flexible and we are happy to work with you to meet the needs of your students and create the best sex ed experience possible.
Elementary School Presentations
Puberty & Anatomy
4th – 6th Grades
With the help of illustrations from age appropriate puberty books, students will:
- Discuss the physical and emotional changes of puberty
- Learn basic reproductive body parts and their functions
- Describe the importance of hygiene throughout puberty
- Identify whom to go to when you need help or have questions
Healthy Relationships & Sexual Harassment
4th – 8th Grades Through large group discussion ad small group activities, students will:- Brainstorm aspects of healthy and unhealthy friendships
- Define crushes, flirting, and sexual harassment
- Distinguish between sexual harassment and healthy relationships
- Identify whom to go to when you need help or have questions
Middle and High School Presentations
Consent
With the help of an interactive video and large and small discussions, students will:
- Define consent, coercion, and manipulation
- Discuss how power imbalance, age, and laws impact consent
- Identify coercion and consent in real-life scenarios
Sexual Orientation and Gender Stereotypes
Through large group discussion and real-life scenarios, students will:
- Define the terms assigned sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and sexual behavior
- Analyze the pressures of gender stereotypes
- Identify ways to combat harmful gender stereotypes in real life scenarios
Pregnancy Prevention
With the help of an interactive activity and hands-on samples, students will be able to:- Summarize how to prevent pregnancy
- Discuss the importance of using birth control and condoms correctly and consistently.
- Identify the available methods of birth control
- Describe the steps to using a condom correctly
Healthy Relationships
Through large group discussion and activities, students will:- Identify key qualities of healthy relationship
- Distinguish between healthy relationships, unhealthy relationships, and warning signs of abuse
- Demonstrate effective communication strategies
Sexually Transmitted Infections
During a large group discussion and hands on practice, students will:- Describe common symptoms of and treatments for STDs, including HIV.
- Explain the importance of STD and HIV testing and counseling if sexually active.
- Describe the steps to using a condom correctly.
Parents Are Sexuality Educators (PASE)
For Parents Only
Through individual reflection and large group discussion, parents will:
- Identify the values and messages they would like to share with their children
- Learn typical stages of sexual development for children and adolescents
- Discuss effective communication skills to aid them in talking with their children about various sexuality topics
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
When Sex Comes Up: How to Talk to Kids About Sex in Professional Settings
During this interactive presentation, participants will:
- Learn to recognize value based statements and questions
- Discuss the different types of questions that are commonly asked and strategies for responding with respect
- Understand what their role is when sex comes up in the context of their job
- Learn strategies for addressing sexual harassment
Sex Positive Sex Ed: What, Why, and How
Through an interactive presentation and small group activities, participants will:- Discuss a working definition of sex positivity
- Learn tips for establishing a sex positive learning environment
- Practice evaluating lesson plans and make adjustments to create sex positive activities
FLASH Training of Educators
This is a full day training. Using interactive activities and group discussion, participants will be able to:- Identify the theories and rationale of the FLASH curriculum
- Describe the importance of key concepts
- Distinguish between different types of questions and identify strategies for answering values based questions
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
SHARP (Sexual Health and Adolescent Risk Prevention)
13-18 Years SHARP is an intensive, interactive single session intervention lasting 3 hours (can be broken up into two 1.5-hour sessions). It incorporates videos, lecture, condom use demonstrations, group discussions and activities, a computer game, goal setting, and a student workbook. SHARP is intended for youth that are likely engaging in alcohol use and/or “risky” sexual situations. Overall objectives for the program are:- Understanding how STI/HIV are transmitted and identifying myths and facts about risky behaviors
- Improving individual condom use and negotiating condom use successfully
- Understanding and developing strategies for sexual risk and alcohol use reduction
- Developing long term goals for reduction in sexual risk and alcohol use
